Self leadership in high stakes | The space in-between
An interesting newsletter hit my inbox this week from a solopreneur I follow. She shared her experience of accepting a speaking gig her sights had been set on for a long time and focused her insights on what she called ‘the space in-between’.
WHAT IS ‘THE SPACE IN-BETWEEN’
‘The space in-between’ are the small pockets of time that happen after you’ve done all the prep and just before you have to deliver. In these moments, time can slow down and seconds and minutes can turn into hours.
It’s the ‘in-between space’ that can be one of the most challenging to navigate when you are fearful or anxious about speaking up in public, regardless of whether you chose the challenge or were nominated for it.
SELF-LEADERSHIP THROUGH THE SPACE IN -BETWEEN
How you lead yourself through this ‘in-between space’ is the difference between showing up with calm, clarity and confidence versus anxiety, overwhelm and self-doubt.
What I see through my clients is that too much energy and focus is placed on creating the ‘perfect’ deck or pitch. No matter how good your content is it won’t help you feel calm and in control when you don’t know how to lead yourself through the in-between spaces.
REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE | STEPPING UP TO THE MIC
In my last corporate role at a big insurer, the annual Christmas party presented me with an opportunity to explore my inner disco diva in a Lip Sync Battle. I persuaded one my colleagues, a fellow disco diva, to take the plunge and give the performances of a lifetime lip-syncing Beyonce and Tina Turner’s Proud Mary!
From the moment we signed-up I had pangs of regret ‘What have I done?!’ ‘I’m going to be a laughing stock!’ ‘How will I remember the words, let alone do the moves!?’ ‘Will I be paralysed with stage fright?” Even though I really wanted to do this, I was also scared of failure, criticism, being mocked and totally showing myself up.
So, in spite of all this, my friend and I went ahead with the practice and the preparation. Now we were signed up there was no going back, no escape. The sequins were ready and it was game on!
When the final moments before stepping up on stage arrived, it was the way I led myself through the in-between space: after the practice and prep, yet before performing our lip sync duet that revolutionised my experience. These moments prioritised:
Kind self-talk
Unwavering self-belief
Conscious breathing
Feeling relaxed and energised
A clear focus, purpose and intention
INSIGHTS
This act of courage, had a huge impact on me and the way I feel now about speaking up in public. I learnt that our fears create a mirage and behind that mirage is a much kinder reality.
I took a leap of faith doing something completely alien to me and it turned out really well, better than I could have ever imagined.
