When I studied art in London as a mature student, ‘Still Life’ drawing was a thing … a thing everyone found challenging.

So, to help us get over the challenge of drawing what was in front of us rather than what we thought we could see, our lecturer literally turned a painting upside down. The results were astonishing. Drawings that represented reality.


ART INSPIRING LIFE

When I need to push through fear, i.e. a story, an unreality, e.g. typically of speaking up or showing up in someway, I take inspiration from this creative tool and look for an alternative way to approach my problem.


A bus crash in central India in 1999, left me paralysed with fear of driving. Avoidance was my strategy, until I realised I was relinquishing my independence. This realisation gave me the courage to face my fear. Instead, of just exposing myself to my fear – driving. I also committed to a new physical goal which I was nervous about – going upside down in headstand.

I found that turning up every day to practice an exercise that was daunting in a measured and safe way was a great way to address my bigger fear. It helped me focus on being really present, breathing calmly and trusting myself – all the things I needed to get over my fear of driving.

Since, then I’ve used this approach of pairing challenges to help progress happen more quickly and smoothly for me and my clients. It’s another way to help rewire your brain when you have fear or anxiety about specific situations.

HABITS I AM HOOKED ON RIGHT NOW …

OCEAN DIPPING

I’ve always been a 27 degree plus ocean dipper, however a recent trip back to Wales changed all that and now I’m taking 10 minute dips thrice weekly in 15-17 degree water and loving it! Did you know the ideal water temperature for women to cold dip in is 15-16 degrees and for men it's 0-4 degrees to get the benefits?
